In 1998 the Albany College of Pharmacy decided to enlarge and relocate the Throop Pharmacy Museum to a more prominent location. A committee was formed to develop the floor plan and improve the facility. Working with architects and the New York State Museum, the final plans were approved in January 2000. In March the Throop Pharmacy Museum was painstakingly dismantled, the contents were cataloged and put into storage. The following fall construction began on the exterior of the new Museum.
By January 2001, the interior of the Museum had become the focus of construction. Attention was given to every detail to maintain the integrity of the original structure. A tin ceiling, tile floor and paint colors, appropriate to the period, were researched and selected. Skilled craftsmen exactly replicated new millwork from the older pieces. The new Pharmacy Museum boasts many improvements. It has been relocated to a more prominent and accessible space, on the first floor of the O'Brien Building, directly across from the main entrance to the College. The Museum has been enlarged and divided into two rooms. The Historic Throop Drugstore was located in the larger room and a manufacturing pharmacy has been created in the smaller room. More windows were added to the exterior facade of the building doubling areas that can be viewed. The new Museum also includes improved lighting and climate control. |
